Review: Majestic Theater’s Production of Emma – A Regency Delight

The Majestic Theater’s latest production, Jane Austen’s Emma: An Immersive Love Story, is masterfully adapted and directed by the king of the jukebox theater genre, Troy Heard. Running from July 11 to August 11, this immersive experience invites audiences to step into the enchanting world of Jane Austen, filled with love, live music, and delightful mischief.

Coco Lane Rigby is phenomenal as Emma. I first became a fan of Rigby after seeing her stellar performance in the Majestic production of The Craft, and she continues to impress. Rigby captures the essence of Austen’s beloved heroine with charm and wit, making her a delight to watch as she navigates the complex webs of romance and matchmaking. And what a voice!

Joey Derby as Frank Churchill is an absolute hoot, bringing energy and humor to the role – including a memorable Regency-style lap dance that had everyone in stitches. Annette H. Verdonlino is also a standout – I love watching character work that is full of nuance and at times subtly heartbreaking.

Troy Heard once again proves his prowess in the jukebox theater genre. Although I typically can’t do horror, his jukebox theater version of Scream’d had me smiling from ear to ear. Heard’s direction in Emma is no different; he creates an engaging and immersive experience that keeps the audience enthralled (and on their toes) from start to finish.

The art direction in the Majestic Theater productions is consistently detailed and mind-blowing. The Bridgerton-like setting is beautifully brought to life, allowing the audience to feel as though they have stepped back in time. The inclusion of snacks as part of the interactive show is a delightful touch that I greatly appreciate.

Because of the interactive nature, the audience will be asked to move around and, YES, dance to modern hits that have been given a Regency twist. Some people came dressed to the nines, making it hard to tell who was cast and who were attendees. The live music and violins were my favorite part of the show, adding a magical touch to the entire experience.
